INTRODUCTION TO DISCOVER NORFOLK – VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1
Welcome to Discover Norfolk – Volume 1 Issue 1. Discover Norfolk is a new and exciting publication that will build upon the success of its predecessors, Your World (2010-2016) and 2899 Magazine (2008-2010) to continue to showcase this pacific gem. Discover Norfolk is the culmination of years of work in promoting the Norfolk Island destination, its people, history, traditions and contemporary culture.
Many of Norfolk Island’s attributes are synonymous with small communities across Australia and of course other locations in the South Pacific, yet its remote location and geology make it undeniably unique in so many ways. As a result, the ocean has quite literally defined Island-life – from the earliest Polynesian settlers to the present day.
In this issue, we take a closer look at Norfolk’s connection with the ocean. Janelle Blucher brings to life the remarkable tale of the building of the Island’s first recorded vessel, the Norfolk and its subsequent stories. Mary Christian-Bailey recalls the recent building (over 200 years later) of ‘No. 03’ – the newest edition to the line up of Norfolk’s wonderfully iconic lighter boats. And Margarita Sampson’s spotlight feature, ‘Salt in the Blood’ introduces us to local ocean-inspired artist Tracey Yager. Additionally, we are offered a small taste of Norfolk’s ‘Food Glorious Food’ through Rick Kleiner’s Norfolk Island Food Festival article, and we welcome Australian Journalist and Norfolk Island Ambassador Ray Martin, as he recalls his impressions of the Island.
To coincide with the release of this publication we are proud to announce the launch of a new companion website, www.discovernorfolk.com. The Discover Norfolk website will host not only current and future publications, but also the entire back catalogue of our 21 previous Norfolk Island visitor publications produced since 2008. Collectively, they amount to over 100 articles and features on over 1000 pages, which we present for you to read completely free.
It is a pleasure to continue to work closely with the Norfolk Island community to produce this freely available publication, and whether you are holding this copy in your hand to read, or have it in front of you online – I hope you enjoy discovering Norfolk!
