INTRODUCTION TO DISCOVER NORFOLK – VOLUME 1 ISSUE 2

Welcome to Discover Norfolk, Volume 1 Issue 2 – Norfolk’s freely distributed Visitor Guide.

Living in such a remote, yet beautiful dot in the pacific, the importance of food cannot be underestimated. It has shaped Norfolk’s way of life for all of the Island’s settlements. In Discover Norfolk (and previously in YourWorld) we regularly focus on food culture, and in this issue through Janelle Blucher’s article, What to eat? we take a closer look at Norfolk’s connection with food right from the beginning of the first British settlement. There we learn some of the challenges of farming the land and how that has literally shaped the Island’s landscape.

Mary Christian-Bailey tells us the story of some of Norfolk’s long-time quiet achievers in her article, Horses for work and play, while Jeanette Han meets lan and Monica Anderson – two iconic Norfolkers, with a great deal of Stage presence, and Rick Kleiner introduces us to some of Norfolk’s harder-to-meet residents (but listen closely and you might hear one) in his article Now you see it… The Norfolk Island boobook Owl.

Also in this issue we have some fun features that give us a brief insight into High Tea events at Forrester Court, Baunti Escapes’ Norfolk Today Tour and the fascinating Fletcher’s Mutiny Cyclorama – a 360 degree painting that is a must for every Norfolk Island itinerary.

Additionally, Lisa Richards lets us know about En Plein Air painting workshops and why you might just like to ‘Retreat to Norfolk Island.

Discover Norfolk is always an absolute pleasure to produce, and is only made possible by our advertising partners. Please take the time to discover their products and services within the pages of this magazine, and during your stay on our beautiful island home. The Discover Norfolk companion website, www.discovernorfolk.com hosts both current publications as well as the entire back catalogue of our 22 previous Norfolk Island visitor publications. Nearly all back-issue stocks of our publications have been depleted, so this is a fantastic way of keeping the wonderful stories and features they contain alive, and freely available.

Finally, whether you are holding this copy in your hand to read, or have it in front of you online – I hope you enjoy discovering Norfolk!
