INTRODUCTION TO DISCOVER NORFOLK – VOLUME 3 ISSUE 1

Welcome to Discover Norfolk, Vol 3 Iss 1 – Norfolk Island’s freely distributed visitor guide.

10 years ago I began a journey that had no real destination. I wasn’t sure how long my journey would take and it never worried me – I was just happy to see where it led. The goal of my journey was to showcase Norfolk Island and its astounding beauty, its amazing stories, its rich and colourful history and its wonderful people to you.

In the 10 years since that journey began I have produced 26 consecutive publications which feature hundreds of articles, stories and features, and I have printed over 250,000 copies to distribute to Norfolk Island visitors. I have been fortunate to have worked with dozens of extremely talented and passionate writers, and together we have showcased this wondrous Island. I am blessed to have discovered so many unique and remarkable aspects of this fascinating place, though I’m certain that the greatest thing I have discovered is my unwavering love and respect for such a special and captivating home – a love which you will undoubtedly begin to share as you embark upon your own Norfolk Island journey.

I’m proud to offer this publication to you, to take and use as a guide, and to share on your onward journey. I hope you can learn something new about this amazing paradise in the Pacific, and encourage others to find us too. The publication is, and has always been entirely funded by advertiser subscriptions, so please take time to consider the products and services printed on these pages during your stay and for your next visit.

In this issue Jenny Jauczius reflects on 10 years of publications, with a focus on what makes Norfolk so enchanting. Mary Christian-Bailey tells the story of George Father Bailey, the Musical Blacksmith and his family. Helen Brackin from the Norfolk Island Museums tells us a little about creative crafts during the Melanesian Mission days on Norfolk Island, and we also have a number of features for galleries, tours, events and much more.

If you’d like to delve a little deeper, our companion website www.discovernorfolk.com.au holds all of the back issues online for you to read completely free of charge, and has links to all of our advertisers own websites too.

I hope you enjoy discovering beautiful Norfolk Island through these pages and beyond.
