INTRODUCTION TO DISCOVER NORFOLK – VOLUME 7 ISSUE 1

Welcome to Discover Norfolk, Volume 7 Issue 1 – Norfolk Island’s most comprehensive and freely distributed visitor magazine.

Embarking on any new edition of the magazine is both daunting and exciting. There is the inevitable challenge of putting together a publication and connecting the many parts that make it all work, but that is balanced with the excitement of getting to discover new and interesting parts of the island’s history, glimpse into its past and learn about its people, their stories, celebrations and modern day challenges. In many regards I often feel as though Norfolk Island’s history is its own magazine, full of the many layers of the island’s story – all seemingly different, yet all intrinsically linked to form the wonderful island you’ll find today.

In this issue we have a number of articles and features to help you peel back some of those layers, which is quite literally what has been happening at the Norfolk Island Museums; in recent digs the Museums team have unearthed a very interesting well that helps to reveal a little more about Kingston’s’ fascinating past. Jenny Jauczius introduces us to Colleen Crane – a fantastic island character with a wonderful story to share, and Lisa Richards tells us about ‘Prinke’, Norfolk Island’s Eco Shop. We have a little look at the ‘Delicate Balance’ in the Norfolk Island National Park and Marine Parks, and Rose Evans from Norfolk Island Real Estate offers some tips for anyone thinking of trying island life for a while and making Norfolk Island their home. In addition we have a variety of other tour and shopping features throughout the publication.

New to the magazine is an exciting audio option where articles and features are available to listen to online. Look out for the new Assisted Audio badge throughout the publication, and use the QR codes to link to Discover Norfolk online at www.norfolkisland.net where you can listen to the articles and features completely free.
This is a brilliant tool for anyone that is vision impaired, has any learning difficulties, or would simply rather listen to the articles than read them.

Using our QR Code links placed throughout the magazine you can quickly link to features and articles simply by scanning them with your smartphone. Our online home at www.norfolkisland.net is Norfolk’s largest website for you to access hundreds of articles and features, as well as information and links for Accommodation Bookings, Tours, Shopping, Eating Out, Galleries and Attractions, Real Estate, Visitor Information and more – all completely free!

Discover Norfolk has always been funded entirely by advertiser subscriptions. Please take the time to consider the products and services on these pages during your stay, and when planning your next visit.

I hope you enjoy discovering beautiful Norfolk Island.
