Norfolk Art and Finding the Light
Adam Jauczius (pronounced Yow-chus) has been painting Norfolk for 21 years and continues to be fascinated by its beauty, history and everchanging light. The grandson of a Lithuanian/German refugee, Adam began messing around with paint as a toddler. Encouraged by his mother, and grandmother, he learnt to create detailed, vibrant pictures for his own enjoyment.
In 1983 he joined the Bureau of Meteorology as a Technician, but time spent at remote weather stations only inspired him to keep painting. While ‘watching the skies’ Adam also forged a successful artistic career: eleven solo exhibitions, group displays, commissions, two books, stamps, regional prizes and seven Archibald entries. Being a finalist in major Art competitions – like the Moran, Percival and Glover Prize – has been a thrill, but Adam really paints to please himself.
Whether it’s a soulful portrait, or an arresting seascape, he strives to find the light in his subjects. When artist Laura Murrell lived here, during World War One, her sister noted: “Laura has [painted] several views of this unusual island…all of them, I’m sure, would be considered artificial in colour by anyone who has never seen how true they are to nature.” Adam’s artworks, like Laura’s, capture the intense colours and light which are unique to Norfolk and which continue to enchant and surprise our visitors.
In 2017 Adam opened Norfolk Art (opposite Benjamins) to showcase his original paintings, fine art reproductions, prints and cards. Please call in to look at his stunning landscapes and portraits – and perhaps buy a gift or keepsake. You’ll marvel at his depictions of well-known musicians, like Felicity Urquhart, and enjoy Adam’s paintings of local scenes: the old lighter beneath a full moon; Lone Pine at low tide; and pussy willows, glowing in the sun, beside Emily Bay.
