Painting Everyday Detail: Norfolk Art Feature

Stepping into Norfolk Art – a gallery for local painter Adam Jauczius (pronounced Yow-chus) – immediately gives you a sense of Norfolk’s special beauty. Its changing moods, intense colours and bewitching light are evident in Adam’s detailed, vibrant landscapes and portraits. For over two decades he’s depicted local scenes and people, and the Island continues to fascinate him.

Adam spent 41 years as a Weather Technician – here and at desert locations – but remained passionate about capturing the world around him through art. Picasso once said: Painting is just another way of keeping a diary; and Adam has recorded his life in acrylics, oils, pastel and watercolour. Everyday experiences inspire him to ‘grab a brush’ and create pictures.

Hundred Acre Lemons, where a basket of juicy, yellow-green fruit sits amid leaf litter in the sunlight; conveys the simple pleasure of hunting for bush lemons. Lost in the Mist, with pines disappearing into fog; conjures the humidity and low cloud of a rainy morning while Adam’s Stormy Seas, showing white-capped waves racing into shore; evokes our wild surf at twilight.

His artistic career includes eleven solo exhibitions, group displays, commissions, two books, stamps, regional awards and seven Archibald entries. Adam is a Doug Moran semi-finalist, Percival finalist and 2025 Glover finalist but, although he values these accolades, he just wants to keep painting: “I love doing outback, and Tasmanian, scenes; but the light and colours here are unique.  Islanders have connected with my artworks – and that means a lot – but there are still so many scenes I’d like to do.”

Please visit Norfolk Art (opp. Benjamins) to see Adam’s original paintings, fine art reproductions, and prints on canvas and card – they’re perfect as a gift or memento.
