INTRODUCTION TO YOURWORLD NORFOLK ISLAND – VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3
Welcome to YourWorld Norfolk Island, Volume 2 Issue 3.
YourWorld is now safely into its second year of production and continues to provide an array of fascinating articles and remains a showcase for this jewel in the pacific. It is a freely distributed, comprehensive guide to Norfolk Island and I encourage you to take it with you throughout your stay, use it as a guide and then take it with you to be shared with friends and family.
Last year, former KAVHA Site Manager, Bruce Baskervillle introduced us to the KAVHA Public Research Centre, located in No. 9 Quality Row. In this issue we ‘pop next door’ as Lisa Richards, Curator of Norfolk Island Museum welcomes us to No. 10 Quality Row and shares a few of its many stories. No. 10 Quality Row is a restored house museum managed by Norfolk Island Museum in Kingston and is open for you to visit during your stay. There you will catch a glimpse of life in the house through its short but incredibly diverse history, and if you look very closely or ask a museum guide if you get stuck; there are a few treasures to be found in and around its walls.
Mary Christian-Bailey has once again conjured up feelings of yesteryear, taking us back to the begining of the Burnt Pine township through the story of Holloway’s Store and botanist Kevin Mills gives us an introduction to ‘Fabulous’ Fungi.
Norfolk Island is home to several types of fungi, so look out as you ramble in the National Parks and Reserves around the island.
Natalie Grube has crafted two articles for us in this issue including an introduction to ‘Miekduu’, the Norf’k language word for making the most out of the means available. The ability to Miekduu is borne out of necessity on Norfolk, being such a remote location and the spirit of this ingenuity is found in every corner of the island. Natalie also writes about the Norfolk Island Airport and illustrates the significance of Norfolk’s central hub, today and almost 70 years ago.
So, if you are just beginning your Norfolk experience, or still exploring the possibilities, YourWorld can help you make the most of your visit. And if you’re leaving us, come back again soon.
Thope you enjoy your stay on beautiful Norfolk Island.
