INTRODUCTION TO YOURWORLD NORFOLK ISLAND – VOLUME 3 ISSUE 2

Welcome to YourWorld Norfolk Island, Volume 3 Issue 2.

With each new publication of YourWorld, we aim to take you on a fresh journey between the layers of Norfolk Island. The amount of stories to be found on an island measuring only five by eight kilometres seems incomprehensible, yet Norfolk’s history and culture extends from many sources and continues to evolve in the present day – meaning that at Your World, we can always offer something unique to the reader.

Over the past 14 successive publications produced by 2899 Design, nearly 100,000 magazines have been printed, with more than 5,000,000 printed pages in total. Incredibly, we have provided over 90,000 written words on Norfolk Island, from the enthralling heritage left behind by the varied settlements, to the stories of her people, both past and present. In this, our 15th publication, we invite you to embark once again, on a journey of discovery between Norfolk’s layers.

In 1790 the HMS Sirius, flagship of the First Fleet, wrecked on Kingston’s reef. The recovered artefacts are now proudly on display in their very own building as a result of the Norfolk Island Museum – HMS Sirius re-housing project – though the relocation of the artefacts was by no small feat.

With Lisa Richard’s article In Safe Hands’ we receive a fascinating insight into the nail-biting saga for all involved.

Also in this issue, we explore two other buildings full of history, through the charming tales of both the Norfolk Island Bottlehouse and Sweeties. Finally, the enigma of Norfolk’s allure to return time and time again is considered, a sentiment that I trust you will understand once you have visited our shores.
