INTRODUCTION TO YOURWORLD NORFOLK ISLAND – VOLUME 5 ISSUE 2

Welcome to YourWorld Norfolk Island, Volume 5 Issue 2.

This is an exciting issue where we take a journey from the very beginning and travel with Norfolk’s earliest settlers; the plants and the birds, in Kevin Mills’ article, ‘By Wing, Wind & Wave: How Plants and Animals got to Norfolk Island. Lisa Richards discusses Norfolk Island’s actual first settlement and sheds a little light on the Polynesians who made their home in the dunes behind Emily Bay over 600 years ago.

We then move forward in time to Norfolk’s gruelling second penal settlement with Jenny Jauczius’ reflection on changing attitudes toward punishment in the nineteenth century and Marcus Clarke’s classic convict novel, For the Term of His Natural Life. Finally, Mary Christian-Bailey brings us back to the present day and tells us about Norfolk Island’s relationship with Queen Victoria and the monarchy.

You are invited to take this publication, use it as a guide to Norfolk Island and to take it with you when you leave to share a little piece of this pacific paradise with your friends and loved ones.
