INTRODUCTION TO DISCOVER NORFOLK – VOLUME 6 ISSUE 1 

Welcome to Discover Norfolk, Volume 6 Issue 1 – Norfolk Island’s most comprehensive and freely distributed visitor magazine.

Discovering Norfolk is something that is different for everyone – there’s so much to learn that it can be a never ending pursuit if you like, or you can simply pick at the things that pique your interest. Either way, unifying the many layers of Norfolk’s story is really at the heart of this publication and we are always looking at ways of making them easier for you to access. 

I learned very early on in the magazine journey that it wasn’t possible to say everything in any single issue – Norfolk Island has far too many stories for that – so I made sure that all issues were available online to ensure they were kept alive and accessible.

IN THIS ISSUE 

In this issue I’m delighted to present a series of interesting articles and features beginning with a piece by Maree Evans from the Norfolk Island Museum, who shares some history and restoration tales of the Settlement Guardhouse. Jenny Jauczius tells us about author Ruth Parks on Norfolk Island; and we introduce a new spirits company and their Norfolk gin – which I’m proud to be a founding part of. The Norfolk Gin has been developed to celebrate Norfolk Island and  the wonderful story of the sloop Norfolk built on Norfolk Island and launched in 1798. Norfolk was later used by Matthew Flinders to circumnavigate Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and discover it was an island, linking Norfolk Island and Tasmania in the first of many ways. 

We also learn about Norfolk Island artist Tracey Yager’s connection with the ocean through her spectacular artwork, and recent trip on the Lady Nelson replica in Hobart – a ship which also shares a very special Norfolk Island connection. Finally, we revisit Bruce Baskerville’s 2011 article on the Norfolk Plains in Tasmania in an abridged version to read here, or link to the extended article online.
